One of the world's greatest artistic treasures, Sistine Chapel was originally called Capella Magna. The site takes its current name from Pope Sixtus IV, who restored the chapel between 1477 and 1480. The structure has long served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. It's the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. The chapel's fame comes mainly from the frescoes decorating its interior. The ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is the most notable feature and a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art. The ceiling's various elements form part of a larger decoration. The huge fresco entitled "The Last Judgment" is one of Michelangelo's greatest works. Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, and Raphael also contributed to the chapel's impressive interior. Skip the extremely long entry lines by booking a guided tour with the Vatican Museums ahead of time. Sistine Chapel reviews
This was done our own without a guide. I would recommend if you can go out of main tourist season do it a bit to crowded for me. Beautiful place. more »
It's like stepping into the time warp of the Renaissance. Michelangelo's Biblical frescoes are bold, massive, with brilliant and vivid colors and with a strong feel that that he just painted them... more »
I can appreciate the history behind it but I fail to understand why the ceiling of this place seems to be one of the highlights of Rome. If you can, be sure to do the entire tour of the Vatican Museum. Along your way you will see dozens of long hallways with tall ceilings, all of which are painted with beautiful art. Don't rush to see it, rather enjoy all the other beautiful art Rome shows you just by walking anywhere.
This place has already more than 32k reviews, so I don't think I could add something new. I was blessed to visit this place during the pandemic - it was so calm and peaceful without tourists. As a short remark - if you take an audio guide, the content will be different for different languages. The most complete is Italian and English.
