The Rocca Abbaziale is an abbey, designed as a castle, in Subiaco, Lazio, Italy.
The abbey, built in the late 11th century, was designed as a castle to establish control over the surrounding town. It was constructed with fortifications, prison cells, a watchtower, apartments and a chapel dedicated to St. Thomas. The castle was damaged by an earthquake in 1349 and was abandoned. It was looted and further damaged by townsfolk and was left uninhabited for many years thereafter.
In 1476, the castle was restored by cardinal Rodrigo Borgia who expanded the fortifications to defend the oldest part of the building. According to some historians, Cesare Borgia and Lucrezia Borgia were both born in the castle to Rodrigo's mistress Vannozza dei Cattanei. The castle was eventually purchased by the Colonna family.
In 1778, by order of Pope Pius VI, the architect Pietro Camporese further restored the castle, removing medieval elements like the prison cells and fortifications, and installing more modern features like a large clock. Subsequent popes used the castle as accommodation away from Rome. • There is so much to see in Subiaco the Rocca was as beautiful close up as it was from Belvedere B&B.

  • This is a nice and interesting place to visit. If you happen to pass from Subiaco, it's worth a visit. The panorama is breath taking.

  • Beautiful Mansion (didn't look like a castle and seemed too small to be a palace) on the highest mountain in town. Very steep roads, not for the faint of heart if you drive standard.
  • What a beauty! What a shame!!! The small castle dominating over Subiaco is a beauty. You get great views from the top. Once a private palace/residence with beautifully frescoed ceiling and walls and painted doors and windows (you may still see some beautifully preserved), today stands with no maintenance, no cleaning, with humidity -- in a miserable state. Even the terracotta floors are not cleaned after painting the walls. The floors are full of paint and dirt. Even the description of each hall is pasted on cheap crude paste-board. The Rocca shows a great example of of indifference. What a pity! You can reach Subiaco by car or train from Rome. There is also regular bus services. Ample parking around the Rocca.
