Create an itinerary including Basilica di Santa Prassede
Commissioned by Pope Hadrian in the eighth century, Basilica di Santa Prassede in the heart of Rome is a detailed example of early Christian religious architecture. Admire the basilica's Carolingian-era frescoes and carvings, representative of the ongoing artistic renaissance during its construction. Marvel at the large, marble columns lining the apse as you examine religious artifacts from centuries past, including the tombs of several important figures. Note the detail put into the church's massive, intricate mosaic in the main room. You'll see depictions of biblical events and the life of its namesake, St. Praxedes. For a small fee, you can try out the chapel's decorative lighting system. See Basilica di Santa Prassede and all Rome has to offer by arranging your trip with our Rome tour itinerary maker site.

  • A hidden gem from well known bigger church nearby. Love the mosaics also admire the beautiful marble floors. I just adore the nativity scene which changes from day to night with small moving figures. Not to forget take a look at a relic of the flagellation of Jesus Christ.
  • Date of Visit: Dec 19, 2021, approx. 8pm Local Time. For Roman Catholics, this is a Roman Church not to be missed, especially if you are visiting the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore...it's a short walk. WHY? The important & sacred relic of the column where the Flagellation of Jesus Christ took place resides here. The Second Sorrowful Mystery, the Scourging at the Pillar... the column base of that Pillar...and conceivably... The Blood of Jesus Christ may have once fallen onto this column base. This is a very unassuming church from the outside, very easy to miss. But walk inside and you will be treated to a very old, very ancient Roman Catholic Church built by some of the earliest Christians. There is nothing like it among all the Churches of Rome inside the "Old Walls" (which of course can be said of many of them).
