Create an itinerary including Avdat National Park
On a limestone hill in the center of the desert, the World Heritage Site of Avdat National Park represents one of the most important cities on the ancient Incense trade route. Founded in the 3rd century BCE and abandoned in the 7th due to a violent earthquake, the city hosted Nabataeans, Romans, and Byzantines. Explore the last remaining relics and ruins of the metropolis, once teeming with agricultural enterprise and benefiting from the great wealth accumulated from perfume and spice trade along the Mediterranean coast. See the remains of the city's fortress, churches, army camp, and houses. • On the way from Mitzpe Ramon to desert wineries or - even better! - on your way back you'll find these ruins of a former Nabatean glory. Not big if comparing to any other ruins worldwide but it's...

  • Definitely worth a visit. Visitors' center at the foot of the city provides historical background. Amazing historical site with impressive views.
  • Various lengths and difficulties to go depending on who's traveling. Beautiful and serene atmosphere and the animals are barely afraid of humans so taking pictures of them and their babies is a delight. Do mine that entering the water is forbidden, thankfully, and you can see the improvement in the condition of the place since this restriction was put in place. If you plan to go the whole way rather than turning back prepare for to walk back to your car (some 6km). If you can, have a car wait at the end or maybe join another group with a car.
