  • New Jerusalem Church, home to Bartholomäus Ziegenbalgis mausoleum, is opposite to Zion Church The church is built in the shape of a cross, with teak wood from the Jaffna Dutch Ceylon Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg was the first Protestant missionary to land in India in 1707 Ziegenbalg established the very first school for girls in India in 1707 He attended the local school to learn Tamil. In 1715, he translated the Bible into Tamil. He set up India's first printing press at Tranquebar, with Tamil being the first Indian language to be printed. Between 1717 - 18, he established the New Jerusalem Church, conducting services in Tamil. Ziegenbalg died in 1719 at the age of 37 & is buried in the New Jerusalem Church India Post released a special stamp in 2006, with a portrait of Ziegenbalg & the New Jerusalem Church in the background, to mark the celebration of 300 years of the the Tranquebar Mission
  • One of the highlights of Tranquebar. The church built by German missionary Bartholomaus Ziegenbalg sent by the then Danish King in the early 18th century. Church built in 1718, opposite the Zion Church built in 1701. This one was built for the local population, who wanted a separate one from the European elites, said Martin, who works as a caretaker here. Ziegenbalg, who lived for 13 years in Tranquebar, also building a school and a printing press, was buried in this church too.
