Mahalaxmi Temple, Goa

Devoted to the goddess of wealth, Mahalaxmi Temple was the first Hindu shrine built in Goa after 300 years of Portuguese rule. The colorful building with bright yellow and orange exterior was erected in 1818 and renovated in 1983. The original idol of the deity made of black stone was brought to Panaji from the village of Taleigao. Today it lies in a small box opposite the present-day representation of Mahalaxmi. The goddess is represented with four hands wearing a Shiva lingam on her head. Look for the sacred banyan tree where married women come to pray for the longevity of their husbands. The temple comes to life during the big religious holidays that take place in February, May, and October.
