Wander around DakshinaChitra Museum, a campus-like museum where the history of south India comes to life. You can enter the buildings, all of which are original and were removed from their previous locations to be re-erected at the open-air museum, whose name translates as “Picture of the South.” Watch demonstrations of the craftsmen’s work and art; you can even buy some of the works as souvenirs afterwards. • Worth every penny. A good hang out spot for family with kids. Kids really enjoyed it. Puppet show and dance shows on weekends were worth and awesome. A great place to hang out for about half a day... Will definitely visit again soon...
  • This place is basically a beautifully designed ethnic art and handicraft village. It consists of several carefully recreated authentic village ambiences from India. Traditional houses from each region have been painstakingly relocated and restored and kept open to the public, complete with authentic articles of daily use. Award-winning local artistes live there and presenting their art and craft in the village. When we visited the place, there were dance and puppetry performances going on at different places, while UNESCO award-winning artisans were interacting directly with visitors, showcasing and selling their creations. It was a wonderful feeling to interact with the artistes and buy unique, exquisite hand-made art directly from them. The children had a wonderful time walking through the various traditional houses and experiencing the variety of Indian rural art forms as well. A must-see destination when visiting Chennai or Mahabalipuram.
