At Gandhi Memorial Museum, explore one of the five museums in India dedicated to Gandhi, located in the impressive Tamukkam Palace. The memorial museum was established in 1959, after an appeal by the citizens of India, who wanted to see memorials built in Gandhi’s honor. Wander through the historic palace, and discover the blood-stained clothes worn by Gandhi when he was assassinated in 1948. You’ll also find many letters of interest on display, as well as collections relating to India's fight for freedom, Gandhi's life story, and the nation's political history. A visit to Gandhi Memorial Museum represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Madurai day trip tool to plot your vacation.

  • Something never forgettable. Peaceful and lots of memories here. Madurai got its own charming. Every parent should get their child here to learn them more about past and how leaders were those days. Wonderful place to revisit historical events happened then. Parking and a small store available.
  • This building was once the palace of Rani Mangamma. The same has been converted into a museum in memory of Mahatma Gandhi. Very rare objects and photographs connected with the life of Mahatma Gandhi are on display here. The blood stained dress of the Mahatma at the time of his assassination is preserved and displayed here.
