A dilapidated remainder of the British company rule in India, The Residency features old-style colonial buildings now riddled with cannon and bullet holes. Built between 1780 and 1800, the complex features a two-storey museum focusing on the 1857 Indian Rebellion, which left the residence devastated. Around 2,000 graves of British soldiers who perished in the bloody siege of Lucknow lie within the compound. Those interested in history will especially enjoy touring the complex, which has a church, an observatory, a post office, and a jail. Highlights include two restored canons and a tomb of an early 19th-century Oudh ruler, Nawab Saadat Ali Khan I. • It's like revisiting history. The place is ruins of the grand past of India. There is a small museum too. We had a great time here. One caution is that you have to walk a lot. I had senior citizens...

  • Fantastic experience! A visit to our past. 1857 to be precise. Well maintained. The show at the residency was informative. If a person reads about it and then visits, it would be far more exciting. Do not miss the graveyard alongside the church.
  • The ruins of the British Residency bring to mind the war of 1857 in a way history books never can. The walk around was so serene and peaceful and the sprawling green lawns made me want to come back with a book to spend away afternoon lying down on the grass whiling away my time. Definitely a must see on your trip to Lucknow.
