Marvel at the astonishing Buddhist cave shrines built into the rocky hillside at Karla Caves. Head inside the shrines, constructed between the 2nd century BCE and 5th century CE, to discover inscriptions, art, and stupas (dome-shaped structure used as shrines). Witness incredible examples of ancient Buddhist architecture and culture displayed within the caves. The complex contains a Buddhist monastery, which once had two 15 m (49 ft) long pillars, of which only one now remains. Inside the main cave, discover a huge 45 m (148 ft) long and 14 m (46 ft) high "chaitya" hall, carved from stone and one of the largest of its kind in India. Regular maintenance work often causes parts of the protected monument to close to the public. • A peaceful place to visit. You won't regret after climbing all the stairs. Rock cut monuments from Buddhist era. Place of Devi Ekvira temple. Try to reach before 1645. After 1700hrs ticket counter will be closed and you can't enter the cave
  • You get a sense of serenity inside. Not from the religious prospective, just a calm, soothing ambiance, stone walls keep it cooler inside. Be prepared to climb quite a good fleet of stairs, will take min 15 mins and good level of energy to go uphill. Quite well maintained by authorities.
