An engraved cylinder on a spindle, Prayer Wheel is used by devoted Buddhist of Leh Ladakh for enhancing prayer and invoking blessings of the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The mantras are written in Sanskrit on rolls of thin paper and wrapped around the core of the cylinder. The prayer wheels were originally devised for illiterate devotees and it is believed that spinning them clockwise has the same meritorious effect as saying the prayer out loud. If you pay attention, you will see wheels of various sizes and designs all over the streets and squares of Ladakh.
