Admire ancient gompas and exquisite silk embroidery murals at Lamayuru Monastery (Yuru Gompa), a Tibetan Buddhist monastery complex perched atop a huge rock. Cut in the hillside at 3,510 m (11,520 ft), the monastery offers fabulous views of the surrounding snow-capped Lamayuru Mountains and Indus River. Founded by Naropa in the early 11th century, the complex once housed 400 monks. Impressive murals inside the complex show a blend of Tibetan and Indian art and you will see many butter lamps and elaborate carpets in well-preserved ancient meditation cavities. Ornate frescoes and numerous intensely colored statues adorn its richly decorated halls. • This is one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, close to the time when Buddhism arrived here. From afar, the monastery looks like a fortress. The views from here are spectacular - on one side you can see the beautiful and weird terrain of the Moonland and on the other side the village of Lamayuru spread across the hills up and down the slopes. We went twice here. First day, we arrived after 5 PM and the main temple was closed and so we just lazily walked around the complex. Next day, we climbed to the monastery in the morning sun through the tiny lanes of the village and could enter the main temple. There's an entry fee. The temple is similar to the what you see in other monasteries in Ladakh - beautiful colorful paintings covering the walls and big statues of various Buddhas and old monks. It feels peaceful inside. You can also climb up the temple and take higher views of the surrounding area.
  • It's a beautiful monastery with its own history. The cleanliness was a little issue with the public toilets. But apart from that, you'll enjoy a wonderful view on your journey from Leh to this monastery.
