Visit Paradesi Synagogue, the oldest active synagogue in all the 53 countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. Built by prosperous members of the local Jewish community, then controllers of a large part of the world spice trade, the synagogue was completed in 1568. Learn the interesting history of the building and the community it has served for centuries, and admire the synthesis of cultures in its architectural design and customs. Several features both inside and out deserve close examination, including a 14th-century tablet installed on the outer wall, and an oriental rug given by the last Ethiopian emperor, Haile Selassie.
