  • Think royal, think Rajasthan. And when royalty comes to mind, how can gems and jewels be far behind? Established in 2017, the Museum of Gem and Jewellery in Jaipur makes for a fascinating visit, both for the bedazzling collection and their sheer variety. This museum shares “The Story of a Stone to a jewel" a creation of human mind i.e. from mining to manufacturing, a sojourn from minerals to their transformation into gems - to their conversion into jewellery has been displayed beautifully here. There are different galleries displaying precious and semi-precious gemstones, beads, with description of quality, characteristics, and details of the related rough stones like quartz, agate, jade, garnet, peridot & many more. In a typical storytelling fashion, there are on display tools which give the raw materials, like stones, their shape. As one meanders through the spaces between the display boxes, it gives you a sense of how tools evolved through the ages. Apart from these, and what would be of particular interest, is the museum’s varied collection which showcases a dinosaur fossil and other types of fossils, African rough stones, volcanic stones, idols of the nine planets (Navagraha) and their related stones, 8 feet Amethyst druzy pair and more… The museum displays Jaipur’s pride - the exquisite 'kundan–meena' jewellery’ embedded with coloured gemstones, kundan (pure gold), meena (enamel) and diamonds . Museum educates about the off-beat French-enamel, Victorian, Tanjore, Thewa, Fusion jewellery types . Visitors are wooed by the idea of creative jewellery made from materials like rope, leather, grass, clay, shell, plastic, watch parts, playing cards, stamps, blue pottery beads etc. Museum is also showcasing rare diaspore by the brand name Csarite® which is found and mined only in turkey. This diaspore is meticulously excavated at a height of more than 3,000 feet in the remote foothills of the Anatolian mountains in Turkey. Diaspore is a very durable gemstone with a hardness of 6.5 – 7 on the MOHS scale. This puts it in the same ball park as Tanzanite or Perdiot. Museum has recently added a section on Bollywood Jewellery where jewellery worn in many popular films has been displayed. In another section, 32 ornaments worn by lady from head to toe during Indian vedic era is also beautifully presented. Many of the ornaments are still worn during big festivals, occasions and weddings. One section is all about bridal jewellery. There is one complete section which is dedicated to numerous type of hair ornaments worn by a woman. Museum of Gem and Jewellery is one of its kinds, dedicated to Gem and Jewellery, is sure to boost tourism and trade in the city, and is indeed a valuable addition to the city’s rich heritage adding colours to the Pink city. The museum offers a photograph as souvenir free of charge as token of remembrance of a life time experience
