Happy Valley Tea Estate, Darjeeling

#10 of 76 in Things to do in Darjeeling
Farm · Tourist Spot
Considered one of highest tea factories in the world, Happy Valley Tea Estate offers a chance to witness the intricate process of tea production. In 1845 Englishman David Wilson established the estate, which spreads over 177 hectares (437 acres) at a height of 2,100 m (6,800 ft). After a narrow, steep downhill trail, you'll spot the factory with its slightly tilted tin roof, surrounded by tea gardens all over the slopes. Hire a guide to fully grasp the estate's history and economic purpose, and afterwards visit the well-provisioned tea shop to purchase gifts and souvenirs. A visit to Happy Valley Tea Estate represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Darjeeling visit planner to plot your vacation.

  • That's the sign that greets you at the main entrance - we didn't go inside the factory - the dilapidated grounds littered with broken machinery and the sign above the door was very off putting...  more »
  • Awesome place , enjoyed here thoroughly. you are going to see the natural beauty and if you are a photogenic then this place is for you and then structure at the happy Valley make you understand the process of making tea by using the tea leaves starting from How to how to pluck the tea leaves and then what process must be done to make it and then sell it. You are also going to have taste of different type of teas. Instructor is very gentleman when you explain anything gives a lot of example in very cheerful man. ( He is in one of my pic) If you are visiting Darjeeling then must visit this place , it might be the best place you have visited in your life. Most important if you going to meet the instructor you will know the process how to drink the tea to get its real taste and you are also going to taste the tea of high cost which are mostly supplied to foreign only. It's all must visit here 😊😊
  • There was no way I was going to visit Darjeeling and not visit a tea plantation. There is a bunch of them but this is by far the most centrally located. It's a comfortable 20-30 minute from Darjeeling. They do tours once an hour depending on numbers. The tour guide was fine although basically stuck to her script but I did learn some of the vines they use are there over a century! At the end naturally there is tasting and you can buy some tea if you like it They allow you to walk around the grounds which makes for some nice pictures. All of this for 100 rupees.
