Admire elaborate stucco figures at Marundeeswarar Temple, an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Believed to have been built sometime in the seventh century CE, the temple was widely expanded by Chola kings in the 11th century and now features two seven-tiered gate towers with countless colorful sculptures. Its main hall boasts a Somaskanda image of Shiva surrounded by 36 massive, elegantly carved pillars. Spanning about 0.4 ha (1 ac), the temple yard has two large tanks with a golden-colored shrine in the middle of the water. Pilgrims flock here to worship Shiva and seek blessings to protect against diseases. Plan to visit Marundeeswarar Temple during your Chennai vacation using our convenient Chennai itinerary planner.

  • "SOULFUL AND CROWDED" ~® Big Old temple and most of the time the temple is crowded. Maintained well even for this much crowd. Felt good vibes. No separate parking for cars and bike, we have to park around the temple. Couldn't able to find the restrooms. Easy transportation since located in main junction of thiruvanmayuir. Foodies shops are available around the temple. They are not allowing to pond. Pro's: 1. Good and positive vibes 2. Well cleaned and maintained 3. Good air ventilation Con's: 1. No separate parking, have to park owners risk 2. No restrooms 3. Not allowing pond 4. Will get traffic in the evening Overall: "Bit crowded but SOULFUL" ~®
  • Very good ambience! Divine and felt at home. Frequent festivals makes the temple more crowded but good vibes gives us the feel to refresh our souls!
