Venture into Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple, a temple carved out of a monolithic rock sometime in the 9th century and later renovated by the founder of the city, Kempe Gowda. If visiting in January, you'll witness a yearly event where the sculpted works allow the sun to illuminate the shivalinga for one hour only--a testament to ancient knowledge and craftsmanship exercised here. As the oldest temple in the region and major architectural landmark, the temple draws steady crowds, so expect to be one of many tourists. • Blissed with the Darshan of Lord Sri Shiva, this is an ancient Cave temple, located on the banks of a lake called Kempambudi Kere.

  • As we had gone a few days before Mahashivratri there was activity on to make arrangements for the big day. However being there in the morning one could feel the calm atmosphere. Being a cave temple one needs to bow down and enter the abode of Shiva.
  • Great place for devotees of Lord Shiva. I never realized that the stone discs in the front of the temple are of archeological significance. The temple is of cave structure. Don't forget to circumambulate the Shiva shrine in the cave like path. May be a bit challenging, but doable. Must visit temple if you are a history buff or interested in visiting old temples.
