A place of meditation for practitioners of Integral yoga, Matrimandir features a huge golden sphere enveloped by twelve concrete "petals." The four main pillars symbolize wisdom, strength, beauty, and intimacy. The sphere, plated with golden discs, resembles a space ship that landed on an open field next to a large banyan tree--a scene right out of a '70s science fiction movie. The surrounding gardens, also called the Park of Unity, are as peaceful as the temple itself. Put Matrimandir at the forefront of your travel plans using our Auroville driving holiday planner.

It's very peaceful, and serene. Very well maintained and very very beautiful surrounding. You can find drinking water stations at every few hundred metres distance. The layout of path is very thoughtfully designed and also rest rooms are at required places. There are places where one can sit for a while if you feel tired walking. There is a bus service for return journey as one doesn't need to walk back to the entry point. Entry is free. There is beautiful cafeteria and shops arround. All In all,.. It's a must visit place.

Admittedly, entering the landmark requires stamina. If you book your guided visit to the visitor center, it may well be that you have to hold out for 2 days. However, Auroville offers enough activities to get through this time. When the day of the visit arrives, at around 8:45 in the morning, you are taken to a video room and a half-hour film explains the foundations of Auroville. After this you can take the bus to the Matrimandir site. Here you have to wait until you are allowed into the garden all around. A guide provides more detailed information on the idea of the Auroville community. Arrived in the Matrimandir you will be led under the golden symbol and will meditate there for the first time. After some time there, the group enters the fantastically designed interior, which impresses with its unique architecture. A visit is highly recommended and the waiting times are definitely worth it. However, these can also be perceived as time-consuming, which is why there are only 4 out of a possible 5 points.
