Dohány Street Synagogue, Budapest

#9 of 254 in Historic Sites in Hungary
Historic Site · Architectural Building
Steep yourself in Judaism and Moorish Revival architecture at Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Europe, which can seat 3,000 people. Viennese architect Ludwig Forster built the structure between 1854 and 1859 using Islamic influences typical of North Africa and medieval Spain. The synagogue experienced significant destruction during Nazi occupation, when it was bombed and used as a German radio base and stable. However, it was restored to its original design during reconstruction in 1991 and 1998. Visit the site's Heroes' Temple, Jewish Museum, Jewish Cemetery, and Raoul Wallenberg Holocaust Memorial Park. Step inside to see the synagogue's spectacular interior, famous for the colorful, geometric frescoes designed by Hungarian architect Frigyes Feszl. • Incredible place you don't want to miss. Impressive huge synagogue. One of the biggest in the world. Something you've never seen when going in to a synagogue. different vibe going in. Mixture of cultures, with a somehow church lookalike. But with all the Jewish significance. Going in through the main entrance is a great feeling and seeing all it's beauty even more. Worth taking a look. Includes the museum which is great and informative. One should take the tour!
  • I am a Japanese tourist. It was my first time to visit Budapest, and also Synagogue. So beautiful and absolutely gorgeous. I went to see the exhibition as well, and I lost my camera there. I almost cried when I noticed that I lost it, and I went back to the Synagogue and asked the security staff if they have my camera, but they didn't. I came back to the exhibition reception and asked again. And the gentleman gave me the camera!!!! They found my camera and keeping it for me. I was really touched. I never expected my camera would come back to me, but yes, here in Budapest!!!! I love Hungarian people!!! Thank you so much!! I will come back here again!!!
