August Horch Museum, Zwickau

Opened in 2004, August Horch Museum covers the history of automobile manufacturing in Zwickau, home of the Horch and Audi car brands prior to World War II. The museum is housed within a former factory where August Horch, an engineer and automobile pioneer, first established his Audi enterprise in 1910. Numerous vintage cars are parked within exhibits made to look like gas stations or entire streetscapes from the 1930s. The permanent exhibit space is chronologically designed, starting with the early years of Zwickau's car industry and concluding nearly one century later, with the production of Volkswagens in the 1990s. The automotive odyssey is presented through 70 large and small exhibits, highlighted by computer animations, historic documents, and video presentations.
