One of the most popular castle destinations in Saxony-Anhalt, Wernigerode Castle was built into a slope in 1213. In the 18th century, Count Christian Ernest had the castle renovated in the Baroque style that you see today. More renovations in the 19th century added the romantic touch that makes the castle seem as if it arose from the pages of a fairytale. The interior courtyard comes to life during the Christmas season with activities and events happening every hour. These include storytelling, minstrels, reenactments, and a Christmas market. The castle museum is open throughout the year and often hosts conferences, weddings, and events because of its beautiful interior architecture. This castle is located in the top of a hill, having a magnificent view towards the town of Wernigerode. The garden of the castle and the view are the best sights of the castle. The castle indoors is nice, well preserved, but you should do not expect to see a palace. There are more luxury castles in Vienna or elsewhere. Also, the whole castle architecture is asymmetrical and that's also beautiful and creative. It gives a mysterious and kind of dark sense to me. For sure it worth a visit combined with a visit to the town underneath which is also very picturesque.

Well worth the visit. We were not sure what to expect of Wernigerode but we were absolutely blown away by this castle. Such an incredible building inside and out. I would recommend paying to see the inside as it's really impressive.
