In the 18th century, Count Christian Ernest had the castle renovated in the Baroque style that you see today. More renovations in the 19th century added the romantic touch that makes the castle seem as if it arose from the pages of a fairytale. The interior courtyard comes to life during the Christmas season with activities and events happening every hour. These include storytelling, minstrels, reenactments, and a Christmas market. We didn't go inside but did enjoy the walk up (midweek late September so none of the traffic complained about elsewhere) and the views from the top as well as looking at the outside of the building...

We very much enjoyed the Castles beautiful interior and its history. The trail was clearly marked however English translation for some rooms was lacking a bit and we were glad that we had brought..... more

This castle is located in the top of a hill, having a magnificent view towards the town of Wernigerode. The garden of the castle and the view are the best sights of the castle. The castle indoors is nice, well preserved, but you should do not expect to see a palace. There are more luxury castles in Vienna or elsewhere. Also, the whole castle architecture is asymmetrical and that's also beautiful and creative. It gives a mysterious and kind of dark sense to me. For sure it worth a visit combined with a visit to the town underneath which is also very picturesque.

Well worth the visit. We were not sure what to expect of Wernigerode but we were absolutely blown away by this castle. Such an incredible building inside and out. I would recommend paying to see the inside as it's really impressive.
