Speyer

4.1
Specialty Museums · Sacred & Religious Sites · Aquariums
With origins in the days of the Roman Empire and a religious history dating as far back as the 4th century, Speyer has long been known for its role as a hotbed of ecclesiastical reform. Often cited as being the birthplace of Protestantism, the city saw the “protestation”, led by Martin Luther, in the year 1529. Though much of Speyer’s appeal lies in this spiritual history, it boasts a surprisingly developed commercial center for a relatively small town, complete with traditional German crafts passed down for generations. This heritage, coupled with its myriad historical Jewish sites and Baroque architecture mainly spared by World War II, have earned it its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
