Friedrich Ebert Memorial (Gedenkstatte)
Learn about the life and times of one of Germany's most influential figures at Friedrich Ebert Memorial (Gedenkstatte), dedicated to the nation's very first democratically elected head of state. Born into a modest, working-class family, Friedrich Ebert rose through the ranks of the Social Democratic Party to become the President of Weimar Germany in 1919, following its defeat in World War I. Visit the memorial to wander the rooms, outfitted with period furnishings, in which Ebert spent his formative years. You'll learn not only about Ebert's own life story and rise to power, but also about the greater context of politics and divisions in Germany during this critical period. Join in on a free guided tour to get a more in-depth understanding of the topics at hand, but be sure to arrange it in advance. Check the memorial's website for information about its frequently held seminars, events, activities, and guest talks on a range of subjects. With our world travel planner, Heidelberg attractions like Friedrich Ebert Memorial (Gedenkstatte) can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

This was an interesting story about a young boy who was the son of a sadler. He learned his father's trade, and travelled perfecting his craft. He was appalled by the injustice of the working class...

Charming place, worth seeing and it does not take much time.

I do recommend it very much and it is for free. If you are living in Germany as I am, I would say this is a must to know. This is a really really good museum and super important to better know the history of Germany in last about 100 years and how the country is politically organized now. Well organized and guided with quality contents. You can also visit a medium class house from the end of the 19 century, quite representative and shocking. Please, do not forget the audio-guide which is super helpful, particuarly for non German speakers. I left a tipp because I truly enjoy and like it.
