Shaping Cologne's Old Town skyline since the Middle Ages, the Romanesque Gross St. Martin is one of the city's most recognizable buildings--and, after severe World War II damage, has only been opened to visitors again since 1985. The church, built atop the remnants of a Roman chapel on what was once a small island in the Rhine, dates to the 12th and 13th centuries. Now in the hands of the Jerusalem Community, this fully restored church has been brought back to its previous glory. Be sure to visit the crypt for a look at the church's Roman foundations.
