Auerbach Castle is one of several fortresses along the Bergstrasse in southern Hesse, Germany. The castle was originally built by King Charlemagne (Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire) and rebuilt by Count Diether IV of the Katzenelnbogen dynasty in the second quarter of the 13th century. Today it remains standing atop a hill known as Urberg (part of the Melibokus) above the town of Bensheim-Auerbach.

  • Free admission and awesome views! A very cool site to visit! The restaurant was closed while we were there and apparently they rent rooms to stay for the night.

  • This is an interesting and fun ruin to explore, with spectacular 360-degree views. When we found out it's possible to stay within the castle grounds--whoa! (Check AirBnB or the castle's website...

  • I was driving to Heilbronn from Frankfurt and saw an interesting looking castle on a big hill so I pulled off the motorway and went there! It turned out to be Auerbach Castle, one of the best I've been to. It was free to enter and you can really explore the place, climbing the spiral staircases to get to the top of the two main towers. The views at the top are absolutely breathtaking! Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
  • Truly a magnificent place to visit, whether you are a history buff or not! The ascending drive...navigating a couple of tight turns along the way, the scenery pops...the freshness of the air; your senses come alive amongst nature! The entry to the castle is spectacular. The forest and the canopy encapsulates you as you make your way across the waterway, the sound of your feet upon the wooden planks of the bridge, steadily climbing the incline before you are greeted by the stone arched entrance, leasing into the courtyard. You cannot help to admire the stone walls encompassing you, decrarive stone window frames scattered, allowing natural light and the cooling air to pass. As you shift your focus up, towers rise high from the walls. Exploring each tower, not only allows your imagination to run wild, you cannot help to appreciate the stone mason work, the tight spiral staircases and what those of the period must have endured. Upon reaching the lookout of the tower, you quickly realise your height above the canopy; awaiting you are some of the most gorgeous panoramic vistas. Upon completing your exploration, you have the option to sit in the fresh air an enjoy a beverage or enjoy a meal at the restaurant that features a stunning balcony view. This is an adventure and exploration you should undertake! Make the time in your schedule.
