The medieval St. Anne's Church, Augsburg-- the earliest example of Renaissance architecture in German--was originally part of a monastery built in 1321. You not only can see the apartment where Martin Luther, the seminal figure of the Protestant Reformation, stayed during his visit to the monastery (now a small museum itself), but you also can visit the grand Fugger chapel, the burial place for the prominent family of that name. The structure's elaborate interior features a ceiling with colorful frescoes and intricate stuccowork. • This church, which is now Evangelical (Lutheran), is filled with light, enabling one to appreciate its late medieval and Renaissance background. There are a number of interesting pieces of art...

  • A real treasure - besides being historical, there is much beauty to be found inside as well as the original painting of Martin Luther attributed to Cranach. This church began as a Carmelite cloister in the early 14th Century, and other major portions of the building date to the late 15th Century and right around 1600. The small, older chapel is stunning. This site is well worth the visit - allow time to take it all in!
  • This lutherian church is marvelously decorated, because it used to be catholic until the reformation. Really beautiful! The Fugger chapel, donated by the Fugger family before the reformation where the tomb of Jakob the Rich is located, still belongs to the catholic church today. Also notable is the Luther museum located on the first floor. A must see when you are in Augsburg!
