Built in the early 11th century, Cathedral of St. Maria (Dom St. Maria) stands as an exquisite example of the Romanesque churches of the Holy Roman Empire--and the site of the famous, 1,000-year-old rose bush that is said to symbolize the prosperity of the city of Hildesheim. Legend says that as long as the bush continues to survive, so will the city. Other aspects of the property are impressive, too. Bishop Berward commissioned the church's bronze doors in 1015. The two large chandeliers date back to the 11th century, while the shrine to St. Epiphanius, dating back to the 12th century. The sarcophagus of St. Godehard also is here. Stained glass windows cast a colorful light inside the church. The cathedral is now on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list, and the museum houses one of the largest collections of medieval treasures in Europe. • Cathedral is not too far of a walk from the Rathaus, so worth a the walk for a visit. The inside is massive in the gothic style columns and layout. Eventually found the cloister and the museum...

  • Must see in Augsburg. This is one breath taking cathedral. Take your time and really look at all the different altars, explore the various rooms and walk down some stairs; so worth it.
