  • The Transportation Camp was in use between 1852 and 1946. It was built on this location even before the city of Saint Laurent was started. Prisoners arrived here from France to be despatched into Guyana to do development work, or maybe sent to Devil's Island if they were too difficult or dangerous. Our tour guide Imro told us the story that if prisoners were freed, they were allowed to select a spouse from the female prison, for which the female prisoners would do their utmost to be chosen. Not sure if it is true but a good anecdote anyway. Currently the prison is only partially used but very interesting to visit and almost the first thing you see when you arrive by boat from Albina.
  • Historic place where you can feel what has happened there in the past
