  • We stumbled upon this cute little fountain while wondering the streets of Toulouse. The fountain gives character to the little adjacent streets.

  • The Boulbonne fountain was built in 1984 on the site of the old Quatre-Carres well, on plans by the architect Bernard Calley. It consists of a brick wall formed by four pillars crowned with stone spheres and surmounted by a curvilinear pediment, which is inspired by the architecture of neighboring buildings. Water gushes out of three lion's muzzles, the work of sculptor Madeleine Thézénas du Moncel. The sculpted group rests on the central plinth. It is a 1910 work by Toulouse sculptor Jacques Labatut, part of a larger set and designed to adorn the Place du Capitole, but remained in the city's reserves. It represents the Garonne providing electricity to the city of Toulouse, thanks to the Bazacle mills. The Garonne, a female figure leaning under the arch of a bridge, is supported by a paddle wheel. Above, the city of Toulouse, dressed in local costume, holds a rudder in its right hand.
