Logis de la Chabotterie, or Lodge of Chabotterie, was the last site of Vendee’s “great war.” General Charette was taken to the lodge after his capture, but it must have been a pleasant prison sentence and once you’ve see it’s enchanting environs you’ll understand why. Manicured 18th century gardens abut a house that is dedicated to Vendee’s war history and the stories of historical personages who’ve passed through the lodge. It is often the site of spectacles and concerts because of its import in the region’s history; but, spectacle or no, you’ll delight in the romantic heroism of this little maison tucked away in the French countryside. • This place is really good. The kids loved the interactive audio guide about the history of the area and house. This place is such good value - kids are free and horse and cart ride was 1 euro for...

  • We spent the morning at this well restored Logis, learning about the history of the Wars of the Vendée. There is an audio presentation in the first few rooms that you pass through - explaining the local history and the people involved - the guide us in several different languages so is easy to follow once you master the headsets. The staff were very helpful. Several rooms of the Logis have been recreated with period furniture and the building is quite impressive. Our favourite part was the formal gardens - complete with ornate box hedges, beds of poppies and a haha moat. Tip: take a picnic to eat in the extensive parkland.
  • Great day out. Museum is well thought out with loads of detail for those interested in the Vendée Wars. The spectacle is also great fun and the logos superb. Great value.
