Logis de la Chabotterie, or Lodge of Chabotterie, was the last site of Vendee’s “great war.” General Charette was taken to the lodge after his capture, but it must have been a pleasant prison sentence and once you’ve see it’s enchanting environs you’ll understand why. Manicured 18th century gardens abut a house that is dedicated to Vendee’s war history and the stories of historical personages who’ve passed through the lodge. It is often the site of spectacles and concerts because of its import in the region’s history; but, spectacle or no, you’ll delight in the romantic heroism of this little maison tucked away in the French countryside.
