Chateau de Crussol, Saint-Peray

Must see · Historic Site · Tourist Spot
An explosion in a quarry below Chateau de Crussol severely damaged part of the structure, but what remains is a testament to 12th-century architecture and engineering. In the 11th century, the castle was important in controlling transport along the Rhone River. It was lit on fire dozens of times during France's religious wars in the 16th century. Today you can tour the mostly ruined complex yourself all year round, and guided tours are available in the summer months. Plan a Saint-Peray trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • Great for mini hiking day-trip. Wear comfy shoes and bring water to drink. The trail is stiff and you want to be safe specially when it gets slippery.  more »
  • I felt like a kid again, clambering all over the substantial ruins. There's a lot more to this place than what one sees from afar - well worth the climb!  more »

  • I love this place :-) it's perfect for a short walk up to the castle, or just sit on the sunny hill side that can be reached without climbing. If you feel active you can take the trail for a one/two hour hike, or follow it all the way to the neighboring village Soyons. It's a nice walk through forest and along the cliff with a good view on the valley. Personally I avoid approaching the castle on Saturday or Sunday afternoon, as it'll be quite crowded. The hiking area behind it stays fairly quiet though. It's also a good place to watch the sunset :-)
  • Beautiful place in Rhone valley. Ruins are picturesque and one can rest under the trees.
