Chateau Fort de Pirou, Pirou

Chateau Fort de Pirou comes with its own legend. When the castle was besieged by the Normans in the Middle Ages, the lord of Chateau Fort de Pirou and his family used an old wizard's book to turn themselves into geese and escape during the assault. Unfortunately, when they tried to reverse the spell a few days later, they realized the book had burned along with the castle. To this day, wild geese still alight here every year in March during their annual migration--and those who believe the legend think they know why. While the legend probably isn't true, what we do know for sure is that the structure was initially built of wood, and later stone, in the 12th century. It's location near the English Channel made it ideal for watching the coast for invasion. In the 18th century, the castle became a farm. Then the government renovated it in the 20th century and opened to the public as a historic monument.
