Create an itinerary including Chateau de Murol
As the first castle built on a basalt volcanic rock outcrop in the 12th century, Chateau de Murol provided surveillance of several roads overlooking what is now the town of Murol. It was reinforced in the 14th century by Guillaume de Sam who built the keep, a second chapel, and the eastern buildings. The inner castle boasts 10 m (33 ft) high walls built on a basalt base. Next to the keep connected to a smaller tower by a curtain wall, there are two chapels from the 13th and the 15th centuries. A ramp leads to a door decorated with Murol arms and the crest of the d'Estaing family. View remains of the gallery, kitchen, bakery, and several outbuildings; displays of medieval martial arts in the lower courtyard; and also a sound and light show about life in a medieval castle. • Unique castle with lots to bring history to life..incredible views, very exposed on a hot day, steep hill to climb to the entrance, wouldn't take a buggy as not very accessible. Toilets are porta loos and no refreshments apart from a medieval drink vending machine. Take water. Def worth seeing 2 hrs approx long enough for visit.
  • Great for small children admission is approx 10 EUR for adults and children are surprisingly free. This site includes multiple shows and has restored the interiors of this very well renovated castle. Must see in the region.
