The medieval Gothic cathedral, Cathedrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, was built in the 13th century entirely from black lava stone making it highly distinctive and visible from great distances. A step inside reveals beautiful medieval stained glass windows, many Gothic frescoes, and a crypt from the 10th century with two remarkable sarcophagi from the 4th and 5th centuries. Striking architectural features, include its 96.2 m (315 ft) tall twin spires and the blue rose and the orange stained glass windows made in the 14th century above the ambulatory chapels. This is an unusual building in that it is built using lava and that is why it is very dark, almost black. The inside is dark also but with wonderful stained glass windows. It is free to enter.

A magnificent cathedral and a must visit in Clermont-Ferrand. The cathedral has a lot to see and the structure and the looks of the place made a huge impression on me. You can take a coin as a souvenir for a small amount of money as well.

I had an amazing and a peaceful experience visiting this Cathedral. It is truly magnificent. There wasn't much rush so I was able to take time to see and appreciate the glass paintings and its overall architecture. I will definitely go back again for this experience.
