église St Pierre, Chartres

Church · Hidden Gem · Landmark
The Gothic medieval church, église St Pierre, has glorious medieval stained glass from the 14th century, a time that has very little representation in windows. Next to the choir, one of the windows representing the Old Testament is among the oldest stained glass dating back to the late 13th century.

This has been a religious site going back to before the ninth century, but the Norman invasions destroyed the original structures, except the dungeon. Rebuilt in 1320, recent archaeological digs have uncovered older tombs. This quiet church is not very touristy, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful moment listening to the organists who play most every day. • Totally amazing church whose stained glass windows are illuminated from the inside at night, producing the most beautiful effect! The "Chartres en Lumières" visual light media show runs throughout the city from April to October and the Église St Pierre is one of the most beautiful edifices. We took the Little Train (Le Petit Train) from the Cathedral square and saw all the illuminated sites, and went back to St Pierre to get a second look. Fantastic!
  • This church is in poor condition with molds everywhere. The ceiling is also flakey so they had to put a net to protect people from the falling debris
