Create an itinerary including Chateau et Remparts de la Cite de Carcassonne
Home to the Inquisition Tower, Chateau et Remparts de la Cite de Carcassonne served as a headquarters for the Catholic Inquisition. It is one of the best examples of medieval fortified architecture in Europe. Here, you'll find the Musée de la Torture, which documents some of the original torture equipment used in the Inquisition. The outer fortifications of the castle and ramparts include two concentric walls with towers and barbicans to resist attacks by large siege engines. The castle is a classic example of a medieval fortress, complete with a drawbridge and ditch leading to the central keep. • I am not sure if right now it is opened in August, so check online and book a time slot to ensure you are not disappointed.

  • The Château et remparts de la cité de Carcassonne were such a treat. The architecture was stunning and the views of the city and countryside below were breathtaking. When I think of a medieval castle and fortress, Carcassonne is now foremost in my mind. You can reserve a time to visit on-line. You can also purchase an audio guide in various languages to assist as you walk around the vast ramparts and castle. What we found amazing was that a few of the towers and walls were built by the Romans. Very old indeed!
  • Gorgeous gorgeous castle. In the four days I was in the city I went to the castle about 5 times. Very pretty from any angle and any side street. And the inside of the castle is stunning. Definitely recommend to visit at any time of the day. I didn’t get a chance to experience it but I was told by a local friend that it presents spectacular sunset views (from the west side of the castle obviously). Great history and amazing architectural structure.
