One of the most famous sculptures by Auguste Rodin, The Burghers of Calais serves as a monument to an event in 1347 during the Hundred Years' War, when Calais, an important French port on the English Channel, was under siege by the English. Edward III offered to spare the people of the city if its top leaders would surrender themselves to him. One of the wealthiest, Eustache de Saint Pierre, volunteered first, and five others joined him. It was this moment, and this poignant mix of defeat and heroic self-sacrifice, that Rodin captured in his sculpture, scaled somewhat larger than life. The burghers expected to be executed, but their lives were spared by the intervention of England's queen. • There is a lot of history associated with this statue, going back to the 100 Years' War. This has iconic meaning to the inhabitants of this region.

  • Just in front of the monumental City Hall, this is a replica from a very famous work of Rodin. Sort of symbol for the city, even if similar works can e found in other 16 places around the globe...

  • A very nice square and building. Looks like court in Hague. Free parking. You cannot wish more!
  • Interesting story of those 6 bourgeois honored by Calais in front of the city hall that you visit as well, and that you should visit indeed. Great architecture and view from the tower.
