One of the best-preserved and best-known castles in the region--and a location for films such as several films, including "Ever After" (1998) and "Chocolat" (2000)--Chateau de Beynac was built in the 12th century. Perched atop a limestone cliff for defensive purposes, it's been included on the French Ministry of Culture's Historic Monuments list since 1944. Restored in 1962 by Lucien Grosso, highlights include rich tapestries with scenes from the lives of the castle 's former medieval residents. • Stunning! Wonderful chateau with incredibly sensitive rennovation. Fabulous views. Probably the best place I have visited in the Dordogne.

  • Didn’t go INTO the chateaux, but walked all the way around it and up to the top of the hill in the village. Tough walk in the sun, definitely want to be wearing appropriate footwear, but we’ll worth it when at the top. Bring cash as most places prefer that, but there are a lot of small trinket shops and a few places to buy a drink or some food. Chateaux itself was wonderful to observe from the outside, the only reason we didn’t visit inside was due to a lack of cash, as mentioned above. Wonderful views over the Dordogne too!
  • We presented and restored chateau with amazing views. Information around the chateau is interesting but you with need to be able to read French or have the audio guide in a language you are familiar with:-) Well worth a visit.
