Trip Planner: Europe / France / Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur / Bouches-du-Rhone / Arles / Cryptoportiques
Admire the first-century architecture of Cryptoportiques--three double, parallel passageways that were part of the forum. Fifty piers hold up the tunnel-like structures, which are arranged in a U shape. These once may have been barracks for slaves. Though the name is Roman, markings on the stones indicate that Greeks built these Arles structures. The Chapel of the Jesuit College and the City Hall now reside where the forum used to. Visiting the Cryptoportiques is quite an experience. It's totally underground, dark, wet and almost miserable. However it is actually exciting, particularly if you are a History buff. If you like... more »
With very warm and friendly reception staff, this place, so cool in the summer heat, is a must for any Ancient Rome aficionado. I loved it, though with almost non-existent signage, no back story illuminated in any meaningful way to a lay visitor, I can understand people questioning the €4.50 entry fee to see, in parts, "damp cellar" dripping water. An opportunity gone begging, one could say, but still worth the visit due to its condition (for me, even better than Nero's cement cryptoporticus in Rome) and one can always google additional info.
Lovely and cool in the heat wave
