Musee de la Barque Solaire, Giza

See a different side of the Giza necropolis during a visit to Musee de la Barque Solaire, a facility displaying the reconstructed Khufu solar ship. Historians believe that ancient Egyptians buried similar barges with their pharaohs--the vessels were a necessary means of transportation in the afterlife. The museum opened in the 1980s to preserve and showcase the wooden ship, discovered in 1954 broken in thousands of small pieces. The reassembly is impressive in and of itself, as it took nearly 14 years to complete.
