Tour the historic streets of Cairo Citadel, an imposing medieval fortress containing a wealth of important architectural and religious sights. The center of Egyptian politics from its foundation in 1176 CE to Egyptian independence in 1946, the hilltop citadel still dominates the capital's skyline, with its sturdy ramparts containing a forest of minarets and domes. Mosques from the 14th, 16th, and 19th centuries embody the changes in Islamic design over the years, while a number of informative museums provide more context. Worth a visit to see something most day tourist don't get to. Great view of Cairo from the top. I don't think the entire complex takes more than an hour to see.

It houses 2 immensely stunning Mosques, museums containing better exhibits than the Egyptian antiquities museum, stunningly clean and less crowded cafe and atmosphere. No 1 thing to do in Cairo...

What an amazing experience we had visiting this monument! This experience was beyond my expectations. Due to the fact that we travel often, we tend to feel like some monuments resemble each other a lot which may make the experience less exciting. But this is a monument that you just must see. I very glad I had this experience on my itinerary. Inside the monument is just as amazing as outside. They have thought of every single thing to enhance this beautiful site! Very impressive!

A beautiful fortification built by the first sultan of Egypt, Saladin, to keep the crusaders out. Inside the walls there is the older original mosque and a newer one from 1820. Both are beautiful to visit. It is expected that you take off your shoes and wear long sleeved shirts to enter the mosques, of course. There is also a museum of the old jail, police force, and army. The entrance fee for everything there is 200 Egyptian pounds. I think you could still enjoy this by yourself, but it might be better to have a guide who can explain everything to you. The Coptic church is not far outside the compound, walking distance.
