Trip Planner: Europe / Czech Republic / Bohemia / Usti nad Labem Region / Terezin / Památník Terezín - Malá pevnost
Just an hour outside Prague, Památník Terezín - Malá pevnost is a former military fort that played a grim role in World War II. Originally built in the 18th century to strengthen the city's defenses against Prussia, the fortress never saw a real battle, eventually becoming a ghetto and concentration camp for Jews from Czechoslovakia, Germany, and Austria. Although never officially designated as an extermination camp, the ghetto saw the deaths of over 30,000 people, caused in large part by appalling living conditions. Today, this site contains a memorial complex preserving some of the buildings used to house thousands of prisoners. Visit the on-site museum for an in-depth look at the ghetto's role in the "Final Solution." Památník Terezín - Malá pevnost is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.

Památník Terezín - Malá pevnost reviews
A scary place in a great big fortress, called "the little fortress" . You can get a good little pamflet that shows you round the camp. Outside the camp there is a cemetery for 10.000 prisoners who... more »
Before my trip to Prague, I was strongly advised to take this tour of Terezin by family members who had experienced this tour the previous year. Wow, was I impressed by the whole day! From the time... more »
To mark the 50th anniversary of the start of deportations of Jews from the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the first permanent exhibition on the history of the Terezín Ghetto was opened in the former municipal school in Terezín in the fall of 1991. In this way, efforts for a dignified commemoration of the Ghetto victims and correct explanation of its history, tasks facing not only the employees of the Terezín Memorial together with the former inmates but also other representatives of the country’s public life, finally come to fruition after more than forty years. The Museum’s newly conceived permanent exhibition entitled ”Terezín in the 'Final Solution of the Jewish Question '1941 – 1945“ was inaugurated in 2001.
Powerful and hard hitting museum touching on a lot of different aspects of the history of the town. I would definitely recommend that this be part of a tour as I would of found navigating uninhabited streets both difficult and very daunting. Terezin is very much a ghost town and very few locals are walking the streets
