Create an itinerary including The Great Wall at Badaling
Originally built under the Ming dynasty to protect Beijing against invasion and attack, The Great Wall at Badaling was the first part of the Great Wall of China to open for tourists. Visitors can walk a 3.7 km (2.3 mi) stretch that is accessible by both cable car and stairs. Notice the width of the wall here--at 6 m (20 ft) across, it would have accommodated five horses or ten soldiers to march side by side. Watch out for steep and uneven steps, and grab the handrail for stability. A visit to The Great Wall at Badaling represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Beijing road trip app to plot your vacation.

  • The Great Wall of China is alright, but it's got nothing on Bude Tunnel. Would advise a trip there instead.

  • Badaling Great Wall is easily accessible and has easy walking conditions. It is the earliest Ming Great Wall opening to tourists, and attracts the most famous people. It fits for all visitors (wheelchair- friendly).
  • The most famous and picturesque from the accessible sections of the Great Wall. Located 70km from the city center. You should either rent a car for the whole day to take you there and back or use subway+bus. I opted for the latter (subway to Line 10 Jiandemen Station+700m walk+No.919 bus+Badaling Tourist bus - 2 hours in total). I visited the south section first, walked all the way back and then all the way to the top of the north section. My intention was to return with the cable car but unfortunately it was closed. I also noticed people walking down to the east but had no time to follow. Prepare for steep climbing, slippery floor and many steps. The handrails are relatively low and the steep sections slow moving. Proper shoes and light load are highly recommended!
