Examine a rich collection of cultural significance at Ouidah Museum of History, which gives an intimate understanding of the region's history. Restored and reopened in 1967, the 1 hectare (2.47 acre) museum was once a Portuguese fort and slave trade center. The compound contains a chapel, military garrison and barracks, and a residence within its walls--though not all structures house exhibits. Head to the residence to inspect a variety of memorabilia and archaeological relics, some of which date back to prehistoric times. Should you need assistance, hire a trained curator to guide you through the museum. Put Ouidah Museum of History at the forefront of your travel plans using our Ouidah trip itinerary maker website.

It is well worth walking the whole of the Route des esclaves. You can start from the Ouidah Museum of History and end at the gate of no return. The museum itself has some fascinating images showing... more »
Worth a visit for the important but sad slave history. Also very beautiful architecturally and poignant. There were local guides and definitely worth getting one. more »
Not very interesting. We took a French guide, but we didn’t feel like we learned or gained anything from it, and the tour took a long time. Also, the employees were incredibly rude to us at the end. It was weird! Even without that jarring part of the experience, would not recommend. Even though we didn’t enjoy it so much, were going to leave a small tip before they literally screamed at us for wanting to take another look at a part that they rushed us through. If you do go, note that you do not have to pay for anything. And you are totally allowed to go through without a guide, but apparently not look at the same part twice. Yikes.
A very interesting place.
