Create an itinerary including Royal Museum for Central Africa
Known locally as the "Museum of Africa," Royal Museum for Central Africa originally opened to showcase African artifacts brought back to Belgium by colonialists. Located in a neoclassical palace, the grand halls are lined with glass cases that showcase artifacts from different tribes. The museum also claims to hold over 10,000,000 taxidermied animals and an array of insects. Since the fall of colonialism, the museum has focused on anthropological and ethnographic research in Africa, with a few exhibits on other regions, such as Turkey. The large building is rarely crowded so you can purchase a ticket when you arrive. Wander the landscaped grounds, dotted with topiary and sculptures, before or after your museum tour. The animal sculptures, depicting elephants and other large creatures, contrast with the manicured lawns and make good spots to pose for photos. Currently the museum is undergoing extensive renovations. For Royal Museum for Central Africa and beyond, use our Tervuren journey planner to get the most from your Tervuren vacation.

  • Beautifully renovated museum. The building itself is gorgeous with restored wall paintings. It’s a black page out of our country’s history, but they are not covering it up and tell it like it was, which is good. The exhibition itself is divided in different themes, with enough info to get the gist of it all, but not too much so it doesn’t become overwhelming. Combine the museum with a walk in the very nice park that surrounds it.
  • Renovated museum is more organized and easy to navigate. Children love most of it. The landing area is perfect with safes and a place to sit. Also the picnic room where kids can eat and recharge!😊
