Create an itinerary including Sanctuary Wood
Honoring the Canadian troops who fought at Ypres Salient in World War I, Sanctuary Wood marks the spot where the troops executed their first planned offensive against German troops. During the attack the Canadians regained territory at the top of the hill, denying the German troops a view of Ypres. Located just outside the city, terraced gardens lead up to the a gray stone block that bears the Canadian insignia. Walk up to the monument for an excellent view over the town and the landscaped gardens. • Just been today as the lastb place on a 3 day tour, Sanctuary wood Museam is brilliant the trenches are the trenches that were the front line, the cafe is good, hot food at Weekends only. But the staff arr friendly, definitely go, well worth it.
  • Not sure what to say about this museum. This is my 2nd visit and I am still far from sure. The museum itself is ramshackle, some awful mannequins, extremely poorly curated , but has some interesting stiff in to look at. Really the main visiting plus is the trenches, tunnels and fox holes in the wood. Now there is a lot of rust corrugated iron, alot of places to trip, fall and hurt yourself , but it's interesting, enlightening and gives you a tiny glimpse into the horrors of ww1. There is also a small cafe on site, and some brand new toilets. As I say , difficult to square the circle on this one, but I recommend visiting , there is a quality cemetery less than a 100 metres away and a Canadian memorial on hill 62 in walking distance that offers great views of ypres
