Create an itinerary including Saint Bavo's Cathedral
Named for a local saint, Saint Bavo's Cathedral, with its Gothic tower, rises high above the town center. A church or abbey has stood on the site since 942 CE, playing a pivotal role in European history, including the baptism of Charles V. The cathedral is home to a number of masterworks by local artists, such as Hubert and Jan van Eyck, as well as Justus van Gent. Don't miss Van Eyck's masterpiece "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb," displayed in a prominent position inside the chapel, and "Saint Bavo enters the Convent at Ghent" by Peter Paul Rubens, on the cathedral's walls. Visit the cathedral's website for notifications of choral concerts and regular services. To visit Saint Bavo's Cathedral and other attractions in Ghent, use our Ghent online journey planner.

  • There was a lot to see and the art work was interesting. The mystic lamb was the main point of interest but the whole work was excellent.

  • We’ve been in France and Belgium for a week now, and this was undoubtedly the best thing we’ve done so far. The cathedral offers a virtual experience tour for children, and my four kids LOVED it. My husband and I were also impressed! We then were able to see The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb (The Ghent Altarpiece), and it was beautiful beyond words. I cannot say enough positive things. The artistry and architecture of the building moved me to tears. Absolutely worth a visit!
  • A very well-built beautiful cathedral in the city of Gent! If you are already here, definitely visit the mystic lamb painting. It does cost something, but you still shouldn't miss this masterpiece. We also got some flyers which explained the different parts of the polyptychon. The people were extremely friendly and spoke German and English to us. The architecture here is just astonishing, wow!
