A major landmark, St Paul's Cathedral is located near the new public heart of the city, the Federation Square. Built in the revival of the style known as Gothic Transitional, the cathedral was designed by the distinguished architect William Butterfield, who was known for his work on churches. The foundation stone was laid in 1880 on the spot where the first public Christian service was held several decades before. Unusual among the city's notable 19th century buildings, this cathedral was not made from bluestone, the dominant building material in the region.
