Create an itinerary including St. Patrick's Cathedral
Known internationally as a leading example of the Gothic Revival style of architecture, St. Patrick's Cathedral has the distinction of being both the tallest and the largest church building in Australia. The foundation stone was laid in 1858, but the cathedral wasn't finally completed until 1939. The 19th century Catholic community of Melbourne was almost entirely Irish, so the cathedral was dedicated to Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Attend Sunday mass for a chance to hear the renowned Saint Patrick's Choir, founded in 1939 when the Vienna Boys Choir found itself stranded in Australia at the outbreak of war. You can also drop by during the week to take photographs and learn about the city's heritage. • Fair notice at the beginning of this review, I am not religious. I am a huge fan of church and cathedral architecture though. This was an incredible spiritual experience for my wife, son and I. The amber glow from the translucent alabaster windows beautifully lit every nook and cranny of this wonderful building. Would definitely recommend this place as an awe-inspiring place of worship or for those who just admire gothic brickwork. The surrounding garden is also incredibly beautiful and worth a stroll.
  • I’m a big fan of cathedral architecture. I was impressed right from the entrance and the garden surrounding St Patrick’s Cathedral. The outside and inside are absolutely stunning and peaceful. The style of the cathedral falls into the category of Gothic Revival. The most striking thing about St Patrick’s is its height. It is the tallest and, overall, the largest church building in Australia.
