National Gallery of Victoria offers a great lesson in Australian cultural identity. Founded in 1861, the country's oldest public art museum has a vast collection of Australian Aboriginal, colonial, Impressionist, modern, and contemporary art. There's also an international collection, which displays ancient and modern work by artists from around the globe, including Picasso, Rembrandt, and Degas. Make sure you leave time to see some of the 15,000 snapshots in the museum's photo collection. Also check out what the rotating exhibitions are while you're in town. • Wonderful exhibition. Really appreciated seeing the emergence of our early artists and the magnificent works by Robert, Streeton and McCubbin. Well worth going but leave plenty of time as very large.....  more »
  • I've never seen so many people lining up for an art gallery. The queues were related to Covid guidelines, but the crowd inside was real. Fantastic exhibitions on all levels, so much to see and do...  more »

  • Really enjoy exploring the gallery and seeing the new exhibits. Although some exhibits you have to pay to enter, most of the facility is free. The staff are always helpful if you are polite and the food is lovely at the general restaurant on the ground floor. They also cater for children in the gallery exhibits. There's a few interactive kids-oriented exhibits each time we go and our 6 year old really enjoys spending a few hours here. The food here is generally very good (and priced accordingly) but bear in mind the menu isn't aimed at kids but there are some options so if you have a picky eater, you may struggle here.
  • Very extensive collection of artworks. One of the best in Australia. I really enjoyed the Chinese progression of art over time. Another interesting part is the Egyptian and Mesopotamian. The best part is that there is only one or two exhibitions that are paid. The majority is free so this a good place for people on a budget. They also have a large area the back of the museum dedicated for kids play area that is very peaceful. Overall would visit again
